After sleeping way too late (9:30am) we staggered out into a cloud and very windy day. It is true what they say, the weather here can change on a dime. I would guess the temperature today to be around 48 degrees but with the wind chill felt cooler. Still, no rain and great walking weather. After a morning coffee we stopped and bought me a scarf and some cool black leggings that all the women wear here. Then we found our way to the Registry offices where we got our marriage certificate translated into English.

Well I am officially an “honest woman” except that I can’t read what our marriage certificate says because it’s in Icelandic. We’ll get it translated into English tomorrow (Wednesday) and then I’ll know for sure what I’ve agreed to.

We left Seattle on Jet Blue’s red eye flight - leaving 12 p.m., arriving New York at 8 a.m. Jet Blue is a pretty good airline, and it was the first time I’d flown them. Flying is still a cattle call, but at least Jet Blue made some of those ignominies more bearable. Justine took an Ambien and slept OK, and I, even with my sleeping super powers didn’t get a ton of rest. Her dad picked us up early and we spent day napping, lounging and generally trying to feel human again. On Friday morning, I’d gotten up at 5:15 a.m. for work, so my day was spent trying to act normal. I’m always working on a sleep deficit, so two days with little to no sleep made the day feel like one heck of a hangover. I have decided that I’d rather be hung-over than operating on 4 hours of sleep (6 hrs doesn’t bother me though.)

We rented a 4×4 camper. Basically it’s a Dodge pickup with a camper on top that should comfortably sleep Greg and I and still give us room to cook and hang out. It’s about the same price as a hotel room per day would be with the added benefit of being mobile. Plus, we can cook on it, etc.
We pick it up in Reykjavik on the 29th and have 7 days to explore the island before dropping it off at the airport on the 6th, hours before we fly back to NYC. There are plenty of campsites around so I don’t think we’ll have any trouble finding places to park and sleep as well as get showers, picnic, etc.
The next step is boxing up warm clothes and hiking stuff along with my wedding dress and a suit for Greg to ship to the hotel in Reykjavik. One less thing to pack and schlep on the plane with us. Plus our 3 days in Connecticut will no doubt be hot and I don’t want to open the suitcase looking for a swimsuit to have my North Face parka fall out. With global warming clearly in affect it could be quite mild in Iceland. But certain parts of the Island are known to be wetter and colder than others. I’m looking forward to plenty of dips in the many geothermal pools.

We are starting to get things sorted out. We’ve had our marriage papers now for several weeks and finally filled them out. They were so helpful to include a blank document in which each line had been numbered with the corresponding directions for each space in English. Otherwise we’d never had known what to write. So the forms are filled out. The nice thing is that we can have our best man and best woman witness the papers for us here. They don’t have to be there with us in Iceland. They sign off on the letters of honour.

We leave Seattle on Friday, June 22nd on good ol’ Jet Blue. I love the red eye flights. Seriously, you waste no daytime flying. We land in NYC the next morning. Thank god for my parents who have graciously offered to pick us at at the crack of dawn and escort us out to Connecticut. We’ll stay with them for several days enjoying the beach, some time in Manhattan, etc., before heading to Iceland on the 25th. We arrive in Iceland on the 26th and head back to the States on July 6th. This will give us a nice long time to expolore.

It’s expensive getting to Iceland. We were gently looking at tickets for a little while, but didn’t make the jump until this weekend. It looks like we are flying from Seattle to New York on June 22nd, spend three days in New York and fly to Iceland the night of the 25th on the red eye. We leave Reykjavik on the 6th of July, spend that night near the airport, and fly back to Seattle on Saturday the 7th.
